Working Towards Removing Barriers to Equality in Employment
We work with employability groups and organisations to improve understanding of the barriers which disabled people experience when looking for a job. We also work towards educating tomorrow’s employers - young enterprisers and new businesses - to move towards a more positive view of disability within the private sector.
Breaking Barriers - Disability in Employment
Scottish Disability Equality Forum Scottish and Borders Social Enterprise Chamber (SBSEC) have been working in partnership on a project to increase the awareness of the benefits of employing a disabled person, along with increasing employment prospects of disabled people in the Scottish Borders. This project will be delivered in three phases:
- Breaking Barriers – Disability in Employment: An awareness raising document which will include case studies of employees and employers, telling their story
- The Life Cycle: A project to employ a disabled person(s), record the journey for the employer and employee, articulate the lessons learnt and provide recommendation
- What’s in it for me?: An evidence based document which will articulate the benefits of employing a disabled person.
An event celebrating the publication of our first document, Breaking Barriers – Disability in Employment., was held on 3 December in St Boswells.

Disability Equality Internship Programme
SCVO is working in partnership with Inclusion Scotland and Scottish Disability Equality Forum to create paid Internships within third sector organisations for disabled graduates.
All Disability Equality Internship opportunities are open to graduates who:-
- define as disabled under the Equality Act 2010 which defines disability as: someone who has a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on his or her ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities
- are unemployed or under employed
- are aged 18 +
- hold an HND (Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) Level 8) or above
This Scottish Government funded programme will pay for internships at 35 hours a week and £7.85/hour, lasting for 13 weeks. There will be some flexibility to do a reduced number of hours over a longer period if this is deemed to be beneficial for the intern and the employer ie the 455 hours could be spread over a longer period of time.
Although employers will not be asked to contribute to the costs of the internship we require that they provide a range of additional support to the intern to improve the quality of the opportunity, including induction, regular support and supervision and provision of a reference.
Internships will be available across Scotland and aim to be across a range of occupational sectors including social care, conservation, community recycling, sports, creative industries, youth work, housing, etc.
The intern will work on a discrete piece of work with a specific focus that is of value to the organisation, rather than a more general role within the organisation. The intern will be employed directly by the employer and will be subject to their policies and procedures.
