Following on from an information and
discussion session at Beancross in April 2006, SDEF called for inclusive
environmental access and design to be part of architects’ training in
its response to the Building Standards consultation. SDEF also said
there should be greater representation of disabled people and asserted
that British Standards are a minimum that do not adequately meet the
needs of people with rights under the Disability Discrimination Act.

Participants at the event at
Beancross, near Falkirk, were given a presentation by Dorothy Wilson,
architect, from Dundee City Council and questioned closely
StevenScott from the Scottish
Building Standards Agency (SBSA).

There was a
feeling that the Standards should be more prescriptive to ensure that
wheelchair users had sufficient manoevering space and that there was
insufficient regard for people with sensory impairments. Poor provision
of emergency egress was noted along with lack of joined up working
between different agencies.
