The proposed
Single Equalities Bill (SEB) did not feature in the Queen's speech
today and will be delayed now until next year. The SEBwas
dropped following the consultation on the Green Paper, where many
organisations expressed their overwhelming concerns at the
proposals. Many disability groups had rejected changes to the
Disability Equality Duty that were seen as a watering down of
current law.
The delay has been welcomed by the
Employers' Forum on Disability among others and it is hoped that a
revised Bill will address issues raised by respondents to the Green
Paper and that disability groups will have sufficient time to scrutinse
the next draft.
A new draft Bill is expected by November
2008 and the UK Government is expected to report on the responses to the
Green Paper - the Discrimination Law Review in the coming months.
