18/07/08 - Young disabled people in West Lothian enjoy a big taste of sport

Young disabled people aged 17 to 24 in West Lothian will have the opportunity to try out a range of sports and physical activities at Linlithgow Sports Centre this month.

Capability Scotland’s Active Futures West Lothian�service is hosting the ‘Big Taste’ on Friday 25th July between 7pm & 9pm� Disabled youngsters will be able to try a range of activities including football, badminton and swimming..

Record breaking Scottish athlete, Kenny Herriot, will be attending as a sporting ambassador.� Kenny is one of the world's leading wheelchair athletes, breaking the British Record for the marathon in 2005, he has also recently completed a mammoth 1001 mile Lands End to John O’Groats challenge.� Kenny hopes to inspire young people to maximise their own potential.

In addition to meeting and putting questions to Kenny, there will also be opportunities to participate in a range of activities including coaching with Livingston Football Club, The Brain Gain Ceilidh with the Feel Good Factory and badminton with the Scottish Badminton Association. Activities are completely free and there will also be swimming and a led health walk for parents and carers with Put your West Foot Forward'.

The event has been organised by Capability Scotland, to encourage more disabled young people to get involved in mainstream sports and physical activities. Most people want get active and stay healthy however, disabled young people often experience barriers which make it difficult for them to use and mainstream services. These barriers include inaccessible facilities, lack of appropriate public transport and the attitudes of service providers,

Capability Scotland’s Active Futures West Lothian service, which is funded by the Big Lottery Fund, works in partnership West Lothian Leisure, West Lothian Council and NHS Lothian to support disabled young people to adopt a more active lifestyle by accessing and engaging in mainstream physical activities of their choice. The service also works with physical activity providers to help them include and meet the needs of all disabled people.
