24/11/05 - NHS Wheelchair and Special Seating Services in Scotland

Members may recall the Petition to the Scottish Parliament in December 2004 that focused on the delivery of the NHS Wheelchair Service in Scotland, which we supported along with concerned parents, carers and staff of the Service.  Following the hearing of that Petition the Minster for Health and Community Care, Andy Kerr, funded an independent review of the Service which was to report to him by 31st March 2006.

SDEF’s Convenor Ron Skinner is ReTSAG’s National Wheelchair Forum representative on the Wheelchair Steering Group and Core Advisory Group which were set up to oversee the Review. Over the last few months the independent consultants, Frontline, have been gathering information about the Wheelchair Service. The findings from five sub-regional meetings of users and the national wheelchair conference held in Edinburgh have been included in the draft Report and Consultation Paper which is available at the following website address  www.nhshealthquality.org/nhsqis

or is available in hard copy available from Doreen Pedlar at the address below.

Consultation Paper and Response Form

About the Consultation

This consultation paper summarises a review of the current state of wheelchair services in Scotland and sets out options for change that have been identified in consultation with users, carers and service providers.

NHS Quality Improvement Scotland is now seeking the views of all involved in using or providing wheelchair services in Scotland :

  • To ensure that they have accurately and fully captured the key issues in the service that need to be addressed in the report to the Minister for Health and Community Care
  • To seek the views of users, carers and providers of the service with regard to the options for improving the service.

The Steering Group responsible for preparing the report to the Minister would value your time in responding to the consultation document.
