11/07/08 - The RNIB React

<back>

The RNIB REACT is an active audio sign system developed for the RNIB (Royal National Institute for the Blind) that is installed in public areas, providing way-finding and other important information on and within buildings, on city streets, in trains and at bus stations. Although intended primarily for the visually impaired, the capabilities are such that the general public can also benefit. Companies and organisations can help provide a larger network for REACT whilst enlarging their customer support network and DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) compliance.

The REACT unit is installed on walls of buildings, on lampposts and in places where audio messages can assist the visually impaired to locate specific areas of a town or transport information. For example, it can give the street names adjacent to the unit and other useful local access information. This information enables blind and partially sighted people get around more safely, independently and with increased confidence. A radio frequency FOB - a device similar to a car key fob - which is carried by a visually impaired person, activates the REACT unit when they approach the unit within a pre-determined range. This triggers an appropriate audio message. The FOBs are supplied by the RNIB to organisations such as local Councils, visually impaired social groups and to individual companies who install units.

For further information download the Information Brochure (PDF 519KB) or visit the REACT section on the RNIB website
