26/06/08 - Down's syndrome Dolls now available in the UK.

<back>

Down's Syndrome dolls are now being produced by a US company. they have been designed with the aim of giving Down's children a toy that reflects themselves as they are, not at perceived physical perfection such as Barbie or Baby Annabel.

You can buy dolls with walking frames, hearing aids and guide dogs, and a few years ago when Mattel launched Barbie's friend in a wheelchair, Becky, the doll sold out within weeks.

The Down's Syndrome dolls are produced by Helga Parks who had a niece with Down's and discovered that such dolls are used in kindergartens in Germany to educate children about disability.

So far the feedback on the dolls has been very positive.

Her new venture is producing "Chemo Friends" for children undergoing chemotherapy. She also produces "Anatomical Teddy" which can be used to explain surgery in a less frightening way to a child about to undergo surgery.
