Draft National Strategy for Housing for Older People

We would appreciate your views on the following consultation of the Draft National Strategy for Housing for Older People.  The strategy aims to address the need for sustainable adequate housing care and support as the number of older people living in Scotland increases.

The ageing population in Scotland is expected to increase by 83% between 2008 and 2033.  This will mean a greater demand for adequate care and housing support – particularly for older people with a disability.  This strategy aims to address the need for more sustainable services over the long-term.

The Scottish Government are aware that, as we are living longer, there is an increased need to act now to address the growing demand for adequate housing and support for older people.  The aim of the strategy is to enable older people to stay within their own homes and receive the care and support they need to do so.  At the moment the vast majority (95.5%) of older people do live at home.

As it is becoming increasingly difficult for councils to provide the care and support needed by its tenants, new creative solutions are being investigated through a number of case studies and pilots, outlined in this strategy.
