18/01/06 -  Mobile Software Makes Emails and Word Documents Speak.
Downloadable software that can read emails and Word documents aloud from mobile devices has been launched by the Irish company Magnetic Time .

19/12/05 - RNID Typetalk on mobiles
A wider range of handsets are now compatible with Typetalk and textdirect, on a wide range of networks. The new mobile textphone that runs on the Sony Ericsson P900(i), Nokia 6822 and Nokia 9500 will work on any network. People who have one of these phones can get the special Typetalk software by emailing ict@rnid.org.uk.

15/12/05 - RNID Launches Video Interpreting Service
Video interpreters offer a remote British Sign Language to English interpreting service via a videophone. It may be suitable as an alternative to face to face interpreting and is usually available at short notice for assignments lasting up to 30 minutes.

A free online resource helping people with disabilities to access the internet by customising their computer, mouse and keyboard to their individual needs has been launched by the BBC.

"Tugs" (Tactile User Guidance System) is an innovative interface that transmits directional navigational and hazard warning messages using five miniature vibrating actuators, which are located on the user's body.

28/10/05 - Latest Version of JAWS Compatible With Firefox.
The latest version of the leading JAWS screen reader is now compatible with Mozilla's Firefox, a free web browser that has rapidly gained in popularity, according to Freedom Scientific, the manufacturer of JAWS.

10/10/05 - Adding "Text to Speech" to MS Word
WordTalk
is a 'plug in' template that adds text-to-speech to Microsoft Word for Windows.  Research and experience has shown that students with visual or reading difficulties can find it very helpful to have text read out by the computer.  Supporting reading and study through ICT also offers greater independence and arguably a more useful life skill compared to relying on a human reader.

A system which allows disabled people to control a computer simply by using their eyes was just one of the cutting edge developments unveiled at a recent conference in Glasgow (April 21-22).

Apple computer users can access email, websites, and word processing using a built in text-to-speech translator as part of the new version of Apple's OS X operating system codenamed 'Tiger' launched in April 2005.
