The Foundation distributes its funds to recognised charities in Scotland which are focused on the needs of those who are disadvantaged and marginalised, with particular emphasis on grassroots charities, and organisations which help those most in need become self-sufficient or improve the quality of their lives.

Criteria are set by their Trustees in a way which attempts to include a wide variety of charitable activity.   These criteria are reviewed every three years in consultation with the voluntary sector.  There are three main headings under which the Foundation currently distributes its grants:

• social & community needs
• education & training
• scientific, medical & social research
